Antique Victorian 14k Yellow Gold and Malachite Micro Mosaic Brooch

By antiques-art-design

A particularly fine antique micro mosaic of St Peters Square in Rome set within a Malachite border and bezel set in a 14k gold frame with a photo locket containing the photo of a pretty young lady to the reverse and with a c type clasp to the hinged pin - this piece is interesting in that the micro mosaic can be dated as being made prior to 1852 as it does not show the gas lamps added around the central obelisk in the square and it is an example that includes people and their shadows in the foreground - this detail is usually only applied to larger mosaics and so indicates the quality of this piece - malachite is also one of the more unusual setting materials for micro mosaics - unmarked but tested by Xray Spectrometry - total weight 26.8grms - overall dimensions 45 x 36mm - mosaic c.1850 Italy - setting c.1880
