A Grand Tour micromosaic tray - a rare scalloped tray in carved basalt inlaid with 9 micromosaics of famous Roman views; the largest, a rectangular view of St Peters Square is in the centre (this is a pre 1852 view without the lighting fixtures) and is surrounded at the compass points with small rectangular views of the Colusseum, Arch of Septimus Severus, Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon.  These are interspersed with smaller oval plaques showing, the Forum, the temple of Saturn, Temple of Hercules Victor and the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella - the mosaics are particularly fine and each mounted in a black glass surround - the tray sits on four brass lions paw feet - total weight 2380grms - overall dimensions 285 x 235 x 50mm - c.1830 Italy
