Architecture and Design Symposium
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Opera House, a one-day symposia will bring together Danish and Australian architects and designers to discuss the contemporary role of architecture and design in shaping our collective cultural imaginations and the cities in which they thrive.
Drawing on ambitions for the future of the Sydney Opera House and its rich history, the symposia will examine projects and approaches across two cultures of design and architecture that address the contemporary contexts surrounding our renewed cultural investment in the city.
It could be said that no other modern building has so ambitiously, publicly and controversially embodied the connection between architecture and design as the Sydney Opera House. Drawing together the role of design, architecture, the arts, politics, economics, public opinion and a handful of champions of cultural progress, the conditions that conspired to make the Opera House what it is today seem long past.
This begs the question, in what way would the Opera House be possible today, and how do our contemporary environments and contemporary architecture embody our cultural aspirations? What is the role of Architecture and design in shaping our cultural futures?
With the Sydney Opera House as inspiration, Danish and Australian practices, known for award winning designs of contemporary cultural institutions, materials research, roles in forming cultural policy, navigating the politics of design and hosting urban facilitation, will present their work and discuss the evolving role of our designed environments as shapers of our cultural aspirations and identity.
