A rare solid silver gilt and rosewood lined box - a wonderfully substantial and yet compact table box with an all over pattern of a swirling textured design covering the hinged lid and sides of the box, the base covered in coarse grain leather and fitted with a dark rosewood interior - the exterior has a very pale gilt finish - marked for Stuart Devlin of London and hallmarked for 1969 - Devlin's combinations of texture and contrasts made him an innovator in silver design whose influence is still being felt today - originally from Australia, and although most would not know that they have handled Devlins designs nearly every day (he designed Australia's first decimal coinage and went on to design coins and medals for 36 other countries), he rose to global recognition in London in the mid sixties and as a result has become one of the most sought after silversmiths of the twentieth century - total weight 383grms - overall dimensions 103 x 74 x 42mm - 1969 England
